Josh Berry has become one of the biggest stories to come out of the Xfinity series in 2021. His development and story have become well highlighted thanks to his close relationship with Dale Earnhardt Jr. He’s the kind of story that fans have been clamoring for in a racing world where not many drivers get opportunities based on their talent alone.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has hand picked Josh Berry to drive his late models for many years based on talent alone. He does not come with sponsorship, and Jr. has always helped make his way in his racing career. There are not many drivers with Cup series rides based on talent alone, and this week Berry will make that jump and make his Cup debut.
In a season where JR Motorsports is still fighting for a full-time schedule, Berry getting every opportunity to show off his skills is important. With him driving a Spire Motorsports car, it’s unlikely we’ll see anything incredible out of him on Sunday. Neither Justin Haley or Corey LaJoie are averaging more than a 28th place finish, so the chances of Josh Berry running in the top 20 in his Cup debut are slim, but I think that should be his goal.
If Berry manages a top 20 on Sunday it’s the equivalent to a top 10. He is pulling a triple header this weekend with him finishing second in the ARCA race and being prepared to continue his run of solid finishes in Xfinity. I’m excited to see what he can do with getting good experience at a track this weekend.
We’ve seen him win at the only track on the schedule he came into the season with prior experience at, so this weekend has the potential to be a big step for him. Every minute of seat time in any of the three series is important for attempting to gain sponsorship to finish off his season.
