Another ARCA race and another driver with a lot of hype finished second. In Daytona earlier in the week, Michael Self out ran Hailie Deegan and now young Sam Mayer has done the same to the grandson of Joe Gibbs, Ty Gibbs.
Mayer is carrying momentum from 2019 where he ran 12 races and finished with 4 wins, 11 top fives, and an average finish of 3rd. Now winning his 5th race in the series the Skip’s Western Outfitters 175, it would appear a total takeover is on its way again.
Sam Mayer isn’t a well-known name yet, but he’s well on his way after amazing consistency and finally breaking through for a win to start this season. Well known to his peers however for his aggressive style of racing an unapologetic attitude.
A little snippet from Mayer describing getting the lead from Gibbs to show you what I mean:
“He (Gibbs) drove me up the race track pretty good there, so I was like ‘I’m not gonna take that,’ so I gave it a little bit back off Turn 2, was able to get to the inside and drive away from there. I think he used his stuff up a little too early which gave us the lead.”
He’s currently on a development contract with JR Motorsports and is driving for GMS Racing. He will be competing full-time in the K&N East Series, part-time in the ARCA Series, and will run a limited amount in the Truck Series.
