The 2020 Arca Menards Series kicked off the season with a two day test at Daytona Speedway. This included big names like Haillie Deegan, Michael Self, and David Gravel.
However, little known name Dominique Van Wierngen posted the fastest speed of 181.397 MPH with only four laps ran. An Ontario native whose name has gone under the radar up until now.
At 24, DVW has had limited stock car seat time in the last couple of years with taking a short hiatus from racing and focused more on under the hood affairs. A student of the mechanical engineering program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, DVW has been focusing on her degree and interning as an engineer at Joe Gibbs Racing.
Her stats in NASCAR have been scarce but she has a full season in the K&N series to boast. She averaged a finish of 14th with 4 top tens and 3 top fives. This was a season with Rette Jones Racing, an up and coming team whose found small success but had a solid year with Spencer Davis at the wheel last year.
Her performance was on par with development drivers like Tyler Dippel driving the same equipment.
Her one truck series start ended with a 31st place finish which is once again on par with other drivers in the same car.
DVM seems to be a case of a young driver whose been give the opportunity by a team of great people, but has yet to receive a competitive full time ride.
I think she has some talent that she needs to be given an opportunity to realize. Hopefully she continues to pursue racing after graduation and is given a chance in quality equipment.
